periodontology

Periodontology is concerned with preventing, diagnosing, and treating periodontal disease that can attack the supporting tissues of the teeth, such as gingiva and bone.

Periodontal disease affects 90% of the population over the age of 35.

The main cause is the accumulation of plaque, a colorless bacterial biofilm that can result in chronic infection and inflammation with gingivitis and in some cases periodontitis ,i.e., loss of bone attachment. It often progresses in a silent mode, meaning that symptoms appear only when the disease has already reached an advanced and irreversible stage.

The first signs are redness and bleeding of the gums.

When periodontitis is already advanced, tooth sensitivity or mobility, pain and bad breath may appear.

As with many other diseases, early diagnosis improves prognosis because it allows the disease to stop progressing and prevents irreversible damage or tooth loss.

Brushing your teeth regularly, flossing, and performing professional oral hygiene every six months will help you prevent the onset or progression of the disease.
